San Diego's New Absinthe House
Jolly Boy Saloon and Restaurant is perfect for casual gatherings with family and friends. After $2.8 million in restorations, Jolly Boy Saloon and Restaurant reopened March 2008 to re-create the spirit and excitement of its historic namesake. Located in one of San Diego’s oldest and most adored landmarks, the restaurant was originally built as an adobe home in 1827 and converted to a saloon in 1854 by its Mexican-Californian resident, José Antonio Serrano. Serrano named it Jolly Boy and it eventually became the premier watering hole and gathering place for local ranchers and seafaring visitors alike.
From its interpretation of the original saloon with oil lamps, barrels, Saloon oddities and portraits of Old Town’s famous luminaries and low-lifes, Jolly Boy brings a truly unique historical dining experience to San Diego.
Guests are greeted in grand 19th century style and invited to engage in gambling “board” games and occasional fisticuffs. Unique seafood dishes, heirloom meats, and doses of the ‘green fairy’ Absinthe fills the unique menu. 1850s saloon décor creates a relaxing, fun atmosphere prior to a delicious meal.
